The Big Bad Wolf – My Experiences

Working as a claims adjuster, I was looked at as the ‘Big Bad Wolf’. Sure, at times my canine fangs were glistening but for the most part my puppy dog side shined through. Empathy without even knowing it, was always at the forefront and it was made clear, whether it was a short hug, a firm hand shake, or an empathic conversation it was known that I was no longer the Big Bad Wolf but rather a person who genuinely wanted to help someone in need.

The best part about being an Accident Benefit Consultant is the opportunity to meet people, whether’ it’s over the phone or in-person. My most memorable experiences have been the ones where I got to meet claimants and service providers in person. There is a more meaningful connection when you meet someone live. These opportunities were not often but when they did happen it was worthwhile.

Being independent now, has allowed me to have the freedom to meet my claimants in person and have the opportunity to connect with them at a more human level. Being able to console or comfort them in a time where their life has turned upside down is the most rewarding experience I can describe.

Sometimes and unfortunately, I’ve met a claimant for the first time in-person during settlement discussions or mediations and had only wished I could have met them during their entire insurance period – I think they would have changed their minds about insurance adjusters or at least about me and I would not have been considered the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ but rather the Little Red Riding Hood wanting to visit her grandmother…

Some of my most memorable experiences with claimants were:

Mr. Smith – My maple syrup guy – He lost vision in one eye and injuries to his vocal cords – I felt truly connected with him and his amazing family –They were so grateful that they handed over the most amazing liquid gold – home made Maple Syrup!!  My son got a taste of this amazing syrup and devoured it over his pancakes and before you know it, it was all gone!

Mr. Vanduzen – I remember this insured and his accident as if it happened yesterday – his car flipped on its side and his arm was caught between the median and his vehicle. His arm was amputated. Even though he suffered a very traumatic accident, he prevailed. He was determined to play guitar again. With a biotic arm/prosthetic he did! And I am honored to have been part of his journey

Wendy – a sweet, kind woman – she made my job easy because we were both transparent and knew our intentions – we settled her file and she left me with a hand-made beautiful bag embroidered with butterflies – brings tears to my eyes….

Alida – her son was involved in a serious car accident and fractured his jaw and had eye/occipital issues. We connected instantly– we cried and laughed together – we continued to communicate even when I left my position and started my new venture.
